- Mark in red a quit date on your calendar and taper down before that date
- Never work at the computer or watch TV while smoking
- Once you have quit, brush your teeth (and tongue) often
- Take up a new hobby
- Change as many things in your daily routine as possible
- Remember that this is not something you are taking away from yourself…but something you are giving yourself
- Temporarily avoid people and places that you associate with smoking
- Eat sugarless candy or chew sugarless gum
- Substitute cinnamon sticks
- Have your teeth professionally cleaned
- Think of each minute, hour, day, week, month, year without a cigarette like an investment that you are putting into your pocket. If you slip and have a smoke, you are emptying out your pocket and starting all over again. Keep in mind also that those moments you are craving the cigarette, will be moments you will NEVER have to re-live…. only if you slip and have a smoke will you again experience the pains you have during your withdrawal
- Quitting “cold turkey” works best (unless you are smoking more than 2 packs per day). If you are smoking more than two packs a day, taper down to two packs or less at least 3 weeks before your quit date
- As ghoulish as it might sound, there are both good and bad ways to die. Most diseases associated with smoking are bad ways to die. Do some research to see for yourself.
- Remember the famous line from Jimmy Durante: “If I had known I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself.” Funny as it sounds, the idea makes a lot of sense.
- GOOD LUCK!
